Presentation 2: Virtual Study Series on Local Adaptation Plan for Action (LAPA)

This study group by Dr Deepak Rijal consists of three online sessions that go into depth with practical advice on formulating LAPA.

LAPA has seven steps. It aims at integrating climate adaptation (meaning the process of changing our work to fit better to the big challenge, climate change) into all our development projects no matter what sector we are working in – climate change now concerns all who are working in social work and development. Climate considerations need to be linked to sectoral plans e.g., at ward, municipality, and provincial levels.

The seven steps are a) climate change sensitization, b) climate vulnerability and adaptation assessment, c) prioritization of adaptation options, d) LAPA formulation, e) integration into all planning processes, f) implementation, and g) progress assessment.

As climate change is predicted to impact the poor and vulnerable far harder than other groups, for example:  it will heighten food emergency, separate families leaving children unprotected, it is already causing increasing human trafficking around the world, it concerns all level of education. As we are local organizations – front runners, we need to know how to identify both climate and social vulnerabilities. We need to know how to map these in order to better support our people but also to make qualified and comprehensive arguments when asking for financial support whether that be from governments or NGOs.

These sessions were organized for the members of The Everest Network and the video recording of the presentations could be seen here:
